On September 26, Forbes published an article stating that the Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) plans to expand it’s coverage of immigrant’s social media exploits and some US Citizens. Basically, DHS will scour sites like Facebook and Google to amass data and metadata with the goal of improving the security of our nation’s borders. Some civil rights activists have pointed out that this new proposal – expected to be finalized on October 18 – would constrain free speech on the internet. According to Forbes, here is the relevant part of the plan in Federal Register:
The Department of Homeland Security, therefore, is updating the [file process] to … (5) expand the categories of records to include the following: country of nationality; country of residence; the USCIS Online Account Number; social media handles, aliases, associated identifiable information, and search results.
